PFT (Pulmonary Function Test)

PFT

A Pulmonary Function Test, commonly known as PFT, is a simple, non-invasive test that tells how well your lungs are working. It helps measure how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how efficiently your lungs can move oxygen into your blood.

Whether you have breathing problems or just want to check your lung health, a PFT gives valuable insights into your respiratory system.

Why is PFT Done?

Your doctor may recommend a PFT if you have:

  • Breathing difficulties, such as shortness of breath

  • Chronic cough, wheezing, or chest tightness

  • A history of smoking or exposure to pollution or dust

  • Known lung conditions like Asthma, COPD, or Pulmonary Fibrosis

  • To monitor lung function before surgery

  • To assess how well current medications or treatments are working

How is the Test Performed?

During the test:

  • You’ll be asked to breathe into a special mouthpiece connected to a machine called a spirometer.

  • You may be asked to take deep breaths in and out, or blow as hard and fast as you can.

  • The test usually takes 20–30 minutes and is completely safe and painless.

You may need to avoid heavy meals, smoking, or certain medications before the test—your doctor will guide you.

What Can a PFT Detect?

PFTs help diagnose and monitor conditions like:

  • Asthma

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Bronchitis

  • Lung scarring (fibrosis)

  • Allergic lung disease

  • Effects of occupational or environmental exposures
